The Dark Side of Social Media
Evening Guest Speaker Series
Can you imagine a life without social media? Did you know that the average teenager checks their smartphone over 150 times a day?
Every day, students are engaging in “social combat” with a network of virtual “friends”. Teenagers and young adults often enjoy the anonymity of social media to exchange hurtful or demeaning information with no fear of the consequences. At a time when our kids are developing a greater self-awareness or personal identity they are often relying on the social acceptance of a virtual audience to validate who they are or who they will become. As parents, we are often helpless or unaware of the consequences of this daily exchange of social media or its potentially damaging effects on their emotional well-being.
Rochambeau is pleased to announce an encore performance of the “Dark Side of Social Media” featured last month to Rochambeau high school students. We are offering an extended complement to the original presentation featuring a more in depth look into the emotional impact of social media on our youth. We will be joined by clinical psychotherapist Marc Minkin, who will provide our parents with invaluable insights on how to better understand and manage the role of social media in the lives of our students. The presentation will be held on February 1, 2016 in the auditorium from 6:00 pm to 7:45pm. This invitation is extended to not only parents and their students but to Rochambeau faculty and guests.
